Since its introduction, this lens has garnered a strong reputation for the quality it is capable of delivering, with good reason. Sharpness is excellent in the centre at maximum aperture, and outstanding across the frame when stopped down.

When greater working distance is needed for close-up and macro shooting, the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8 delivers 105mm of reach, exceptional image quality, a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture and 1:1 reproduction ratio. Featuring advanced Nikon lens technologies like Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization, it’s optimized for close-up and macro photography yet versatile enough for all photographic situations—even handheld shooting!
Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization
The AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED’s long reach and built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization bring new possibilities of handheld macro shooting. The lens delivers crisp yet natural images in any genre of photography. The longer focal length offers ample working distance when shooting close-ups of flowers, insects and other small wildlife. It’s medium-telephoto angle-of-view even creates beautiful portraits. Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 3.0 stops of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture.
Outstanding close-up performance
The AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED’s remarkable performance is the result of Micro NIKKOR’s rich legacy in the field of close-up photography combined with innovative Nikon lens technologies. From its superior VR image stabilization system to its ultra-fast, ultra-quiet Silent Wave Motor (SWM), the AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED is an advanced lens the empowers the full potential of advanced D-SLRs.

What can be written in the summary? Nikkor 2.8/105 VR is undoubtedly a very fine instrument, which will enable us taking very sharp photos. The problem (problem for Nikon, not to its customers) is that there is a great competition in the class of macro lenses of focal length 100 mm.
The Samyang 100mm F2.8 ED UMC Macro is a fine lens for macro shooters who prefer manual focus, but you'll have to give up optical stabilization.
Thanks to the addition of Vibration Reduction (VR) technology this is a big lens by conventional 100mm macro standards, and it is also heavier and more expensive than the norm.
There is not a lot I can criticise about this lens considering the optical performance along side the build quality and features. I think it will find a lot of friends amongst both professionals and keen amateurs alike.
This Micro lens from Nikon, was the first of it's kind to include vibration reduction when it was introduced. It sports a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, a silent wave focusing motor, which allows full time manual focus override and Nikon's Nano Crystal anti-reflective lens coatings.
A must have for serious macro work. Doubles as a portrait lens. I like it for panorama landscapes too.
This lens has received mixed reports and my use is still in its early stages, but so far it is brilliant. The results I have got have exceeded my expectations, with some mixed shots, but isn't that what photography is. Don't buy this lens though, if you expect it to do all the work for you.
I use it on my d90 and love this lens, the macro is great as well as using it on other subjects like portrait , still life ,and more ,the only downside is that its very heavy to hand hold for long and very expensive but other than that I recommend it to anyone
Extremely sharp and no discernible distortion. I use this lens on a Nikon D800E for extreme high res pan's (mural prints up to 7.2M x 2.4M from multi Gb files and incredible resolution).
I am a Professional Wildlife Photographer of many years. I use this lens in conjunction with Nikon D3X and full frame camera bodies. It is important to me to consider the artistic limitations of my lenses; I work closely in tandem with Nikon's 200mm Macro lens which is excellent.
I use the 60, 105 and 200 macros regularly. Which I choose is based on desired perspective, working distance requirements and what I'm willing to carry. If you want to get into macro, you can't find a better place to start.
This is the 4th version of this lens I have owned and they have all been amazingly sharp. Each new model tends to be bigger and heavier than the last even though each new version tends to use less metal and more plastic.
